Landscape annual retreat – Writing Workshop

LANDSCAPE WRITING WORKSHOP,
WONGAYA GEDE, BALI
16-20 December 2023

Background:

In December 2023, Tanah Air Beta convened its retreat program for practitioners to reflect on and share their experiences implementing landscape approaches in Indonesia. The workshop explored different aspects of landscape-scale processes, focusing on how to enhance benefit flows to the multiple beneficiaries of these landscapes.

This landscape retreat set out to distil lessons from our work and respond to emerging conservation and development challenges in Indonesia and the region. As the country commits to restoring ecosystems while accelerating investment in critical minerals and infrastructure, achieving these goals will require diverse knowledge in landscape science. Against the backdrop of the new Global Biodiversity Framework, the Bali retreat gathered scientists and practitioners to consider how best to contribute to science, policy, and society through a series of manuscripts for publication.

The meeting was held at Prana Dewi Mountain Resort and the Tanah Air Beta retreat house in Desa Wongaya Gede, at the foot of Mount Batukaru, north of Tabanan, Bali. While the overall aim was to strengthen and expand the implementation of landscape approaches across Indonesia, special attention was given to: efforts to develop Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs) in different parts of the country; long-term studies in several Indonesian landscapes led by different institutions; transdisciplinary approaches in linked landscapes and seascapes; and peatland & mangrove restoration.

Over the course of the retreat, we discussed the goal of capturing shared experiences and lessons learned from the diverse landscapes where our collective group has been working over the last few decades. Many of these studies are based in Kalimantan, Maluku, and Papua, where members of our network have long collaborated with local communities and organizations in managing landscapes and seascapes.

Many of the workshop participants are currently in the process of drafting and refining their papers. We look forward to sharing these stories and insights in the near future.
